Scenario 1 — Ownership transfer (transferencia)

Used when the car is already Spanish-plated and changes hands. Required: NIE/DNI of both parties, contract, last ITV, last IVTM receipt, DGT fee €55.30. Time: same day if filed electronically.

Scenario 2 — Address or holder data change

A simple administrative update. DGT online form, free in most cases or €27. No ITV required.

Scenario 3 — Re-importation

The car was Spanish-plated, exported, and now returns. Full import procedure: ITV, IEDMT, DGT. Tax authority may credit unused IEDMT.

Typical mistakes

  • Treating a re-import as a simple transfer.
  • Skipping the ITV when ownership changes after years abroad.
  • Overpaying for procedures the DGT can do for free.
