What is homologation
Individual homologation certifies that a vehicle meets Spanish and European technical standards. It is required when a vehicle lacks a European COC, when specifications differ from EU norms (steering, lights, emissions) or when major modifications have been made.
Who does it
An authorised engineering office issues the technical report (proyecto técnico) that the ITV station accepts as the basis for registration.
Typical costs
- EU vehicle without COC: €300–€800.
- UK RHD vehicle: €400–€1,500 (headlights, mirror, speedometer).
- Non-EU vehicle (USA, Japan): €600–€3,000 depending on modifications.
Common modifications
- Headlight beam adjustment.
- Speedometer conversion miles → km/h.
- Mirrors and side markers replaced for EU spec.
- Emissions tuning where regulation allows.
Timeline
Engineering report 2–4 weeks; ITV and DGT 2–3 weeks. Total 4–7 weeks.
